ILL AUDIO – Devolution E.P + Exclusive Interview + Free Download

ILL AUDIO 1 - press 2013 bw

After his debut album, Know No Boundaries, dropped earlier this year, Ill Audio has been hard at work back in the studio constructing his next batch of bass heavy badness.  The Devolution EP is a wicked dubstep four tracker which showcases Ill Audio’s diverse ear for deeply cinematic, heartfelt anthems that are hypnotic, dark and sonically devastating! This one is coming out on the huge stateside label, Heavy Artillery label run by Faust & Shortee. Preview below.

Released 23rd September on all good digital outlets including Juno.

To celebrate the release I caught up with him to find out a little more. He also offered us his wicked future jungle remix of Laid Blak’s – Red, which was released on Ruff n Fresh Records last year, as an exclusive free download. Read through to the end of the interview for the track.

1. Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions, for those that don’t know, who are you, what do you do and what style(s) of music do you play?

I produce all tempos of Bass music as iLL AUDiO. I work with vocalists a lot and have played guitar for a long time so theres a lot of live elements going in the mix. Theres a big Rock & Dub influence in the sound.

2. Tell us a bit about what you’re working on now, any releases on the horizon?

I released my debut album a few months ago on Distinctive Records. I was holed up in studios a long time on that, and was really lucky to get to work with some of my favorite artists – Skin, Akala, Roots Manuva, to name a few, plus a full orchestra on some of the tracks. Next up I have an E.P titled ‘Devolution’ dropping on Heavy Artillery next week. The title track is about how mass media and big pharma subjugate the masses through covert means. Pre sales are hinting that it might chart as the feel good hit of the summer.

3. What other artists have you been feeling recently, who are you currently championing in your DJ sets?

Rido, Joe Ford, Memtrix right now. Really pushing the production levels, and not afraid to experiment (more…)

Virus Syndicate – ‘Knock It Back’ ft. Teddy Killerz

Virus Syndicate 'Knock It Back' ft. Teddy Killerz (Midication Records)

So you’ve had a successful music career for nearly ten years, you’ve released critically acclaimed albums and played shows around the world to immense crowds. What’s next? By this stage in their careers most UK MCs are looking to write awful dance-pop hits for the Radio 1 playlist or descend into the land of obscurity, presumably lording their faux celebrity status around horrendous cattle market clubs of a Saturday night in an attempt to cover their bedsheets in someone else’s fake tan.

Manchester-based MC trio Virus Syndicate have a different vision. Last year the group launched their own independent record label, Midication Recordings, on a shoestring budget. Fast forward 14 months and they are unveiling plans to expand into a fully functioning multimedia company – encompassing a recording studio and visual media department – along with a flood of new talent.

“We just thought it was time to do something big. Manchester has so many gifted vocalists, musicians, producers, video directors and actors, and we wanted to be involved in all of that. We want to build a place for new talent from Manchester and all over the world, to help them with our contacts and knowledge of the music industry and to lead by example with our own musical projects.”

The first of those musical projects is Virus Syndicate’s new single ‘Knock It Back’. Produced by OWSLA’s (for the uninitiated, that’s Skrillex’s record label) Teddy Killerz ‘Knock It Back’ is classic Virus Syndicate tongue-in-cheek social commentary against a fresh flavoured trap backdrop. The single is due for release on 15th September with a remix EP to follow on the 29th September which includes remixes from AlixPerez, Noisses and Teddy Killerz own ‘Drop Mix’.

Bro Safari & Space Laces – Fang Banger

Bro Safari & Space Laces - Fang Banger

Bro Safari are more known for their trap, dubstep and general bass heavy nastiness but this tune, produced alongside Space Laces, is an absolute stomping 140 breaks banger. Filthy, low down sub patterns, crashing drum breaks, snapping snares and an incessant vocal urging you to “Get It On The Floor” all combine to create a very original track with elements of trap and dubstep but still kickin a huge breaks vibe! Go get it!

Zombie Robot – Exclusive Interview + Free Download

Zombie Robot

I’m very pleased to be able to bring you a massive, exclusive free download from fast rising producer Zombie Robot. After a few good years producing with partner Paul under the Crackerz & Jam alias, he has recently set out as a solo project and has gone from strength to strength with releases and remixes on Distinctive Records, Bass=Win and Bass + Bars. His productions have gained support from all corners of the breaks scene with Plump DJs, Aquasky, Stanton Warriors, Lady Waks and more all hammering the sounds of the Zombie Robot.

His latest release ‘Party Jacker/Move Go‘ is out now through ‘On The Rise’ and is some of his best work to date. The lead track ‘Party Jacker’ is a head down, breaks chugger with serious booty bouncing sensibilities, fierce basslines and rude gal vox. ‘Move Go’ assaults the listener with a electro style bass riff, snappy beats and slick, squeaks and bleeps. Throw in an epic, twinkling breakdown and have one massive club tune.

Listen below and purchase HERE.

I caught up with the Zombie Robot to find out a little more, read through to the end of the interview to grab your exclusive free download, which sees him meld sounds of the old school with with the classic “You Got Me Burning Up” lyrics, heavy basslines and pumping beats. This one is essential!

1. Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions, for those that don’t know, who are you, what do you do and what style(s) of music do you play?

I’m Richard and I Dj and produce as Zombie Robot; I’m based in the sleepy seaside town of Lowestoft! I am heavily influenced by  oldskool Hardcore and Jungle, but I play a mixture of styles anything that I am feeling at the time really!

2. You seem to be drawing on a number of influences and your output spans from breaks to house and dubstep. How do you describe your sound to people who ask?

Everyone seems to be using the term bass at the moment, but for me that sums up I lot of the music I produce and play! I’m into a wide range of styles, which I think you can see from the music I put out. I am a firm believer that you should enjoy music rather than being hung up genres. (more…)

Walking Def – Love To Give EP + Free Mix

Walking Def - Love To Give EP + Free Mix

Not many acts can say that their debut release was paired with a camera strapped to a baby’s head, then filmed and shown on prime time US TV. But that’s exactly what happened when Walking Def‘s first single, the bass-heavy ‘Running All My Life‘, was picked up by GoPro for their 2013 Super Bowl advert which has now clocked up over a million views on YouTube.

Their next effort, the four-track ‘Love To Give’ EP, is a showcase of Walking Def‘s studio versatility and innate musicality. Opening with the French electro infused ‘Everything’ the trio offer a euphoric 110bpm piece of bass music that fans of Justice should have no problem sliding into their playlist. Moving on to the title track, ‘Love To Give’ is a bittersweet breakbeat rave bomb with a dark edge that’s perfect for peak time dance floor action.

The EP rounds off with two slices of high-energy 140bpm bass. First up is Walking Def’s collaboration with Virus Syndicate, ‘Let Me Show You’. Feel-good disco chords and distinctive Virus vocals are underpinned by a chunky electro bassline creating dance floor havoc. Finally Walking Def pay tribute to their previous single with ‘Come To Me’ a track that will elate fans of bass-heavy dubstep the world over.

As well as the wicked sounds on display on the ‘Love To Give Ep’ the Walking Def guys have compiled an insanely good mix to boot. Taking in all the styles and flavours they are influenced by, they rip through some of the best house, bass, glitch, breaks, electro,  dubstep and everything in between. 18 tracks in 21 minutes expertly mixed, cut and blended.
