Jenova Collective getting back to electro swing:

Shall we play yet more new genre naming games? Well, Balkan electro is how the Rumpsteppers describe this.

Swingamajig--2015

Swingamajig 2015

Well what can I say..? I know that we’ve kept banging on about it, but we can truly say that the bar has been raised. Swingamajig has come of age this year and was absolutely fantastic. The atmosphere was stunning and the quality of acts was second to none. Congratulations to the Electric Swing Circus, C@ in the H@, and all the organisers who did such a fantastic job pulling this together. My own highlights? The Dutty Moonshine Big Band absolutely rocked, great to see Chinese Man bring their downtempo hip hop grooves, Elle & the Pocket Belles with Mistatrick, and of course getting to do my own Silverscreen Soundsytem VJ show. If you missed it this year, then put the date in your diary because there is no better festival to choose on the vintage circuit than this.

Right. Let’s hit the music.

Swing? Ghetto? Yep and yep. You know what’s coming…

It’s never a bad time to drop Etta James’ I Just Wanna Make Love to you and even more so with a new C@ in the H@ mashup version:

Deep, sexy and grooving jazzy beats from Frizzo. Very nice.

Electro Swing Roundup – Supplementary

Swingamajig 2015

Happy May bank holiday!

The latest Electro Swing Roundup will be here exactly one week from today on the 7th of May. Boo hiss… Yes what with preparing my Silver Screen Soundsystem VJ set for Swingamajig (only the biggest electro-swing festival around) and having a very important wedding as part of my day job at Vintage Wedding DJ, it’s had to be delayed. In the meantime simply have a listen to the C@ In The H@’s Swingamajig mix and come join us in Birmingham this weekend!

Jem Stone – Stone Grooves Vol 1

Jem stone

We first saw Jems infectious swing alter-ego surface back in 2004 with some low key remixes for Jalapeno Records and a single release on Finger Lickin Records, but the sound we’re hearing now only really surfaced in 2011 with his debut release on Freshly Squeezed, the “Electric Circus EP“. Since then Jem has let loose a plethora of swing tinged toons on some of the best labels in the scene today. He has recorded a huge collaboration with super funker Kid Creole (ask your parents kids), got down and dirty with “Lick The Spoon” and hit the top (o the town) with MC Mouthmaster Murf and MC Goldseal on Ghetto Funk.

After all the hard work it was inevitable that Jem’s consistent output would form a long player and “Stone Grooves Vol 1″ is the result. The album kicks off with bumping jazz vibes of “The Jem Stone Express” which sets the scene perfectly with smooth, spaced out synth licks and classic swing samples intertwined with beefy kick-snare combo and all kinds of sound effects. Can just imagine walking through some space punk inspired city with this as the soundtrack.

“Well Oiled Machine” throws down some steppy broken beats with a sparse bassline and off kilter synths. “Holy Smoke” (ft. Roxanna Panufnik) (gotta be a relation?) is lush balearic material done right, perfect Ibiza beach music. “No Place For A Lady” sees the swing vibes come out to play again with a bouncy house beat and plenty of horn action. “Sweetpea” marks the halfway point of the album and is almost an album itself. At 10:45 you could squeeze four modern day trap bangers into its time slot (don’t play trap, please). It twists and turns through many sonic soundscapes and ambient noise spheres, bringing the listener on a proper journey with leisurely hip hop beat interludes and organically twinkling pads.

“Hot Dog Supreme” is another slo mo swing-house meld that combines all elements nicely leading into “Storm In A Teacup” which hammers out tribal techno rhythms with disco licks and filter fx. Would love to hear a Soul Of Man breakbeat remix of this! “Penshala” sees the trip hop sound creeping back upon us with great results. On “You Are Nothing Without Me” Jem breaks out the breakbeats on this dark-swing-tinged roller, “Fake Ghost” is a percussive, tech house ride leading into the last track, the aptly named “The Final Curtain”.

Jem has achieved what many dance music artists mess up and has written a proper album. With many twists and turns, highs and lows and a diverse mix of dancefloor beats blended with downtempo grooves and just plain old good music. Full support from Free Breaks Blog.

If you’re feeling any of the tracks they are all available to purchase separately, as an entire album, as a mixed, hour long showcase and if you’re just to tight/skint/poor to muster up a couple of £/$ to support, then the whole thing can be streamed from Soundcloud or below :).

Electro Swing Roundup – October/November 2014

Electro Swing Roundup – October / November 2014

Darkside of the Electro Swing Ball

First off better apologise for last month… starting your own business means that time suddenly becomes very precious and unfortunately last month didn’t make the cut. Still just means that this month is better than ever.

If I was you lot I’d ask for your money back…

Darkside of the Electro Swing Ball

Since I’ve been starting to get on top of my work at Vintage Wedding DJ, I thought it was time to get back into another project and so it has to be time to run another event. We’ve been promising to get the scandalous scamps of electro swing up to Shropshire for a while and so we’re delighted to be welcoming Dutty Moonshine up to join us for our next Electro Swing Ball. We’re going in deeper and darker for this one (definitely would suit the readers of this blog well) so if you live anywhere near the West Midlands come join us for one all mighty shakedown. Getting dressed up is de rigueur for our events and we’ve got another cracking lineup which also features Free Breaks Blog’s head honcho Bertie Dastard, ghetto funkster Supabad (who was very appropriately christened James Brown by his parents – how cool???), hosted as ever by the Delightful Mrs Rickard, Liberty Pink as jazz singer extraordinaire and compère, award winning burlesque from Verity Grey, and myself..? Well I’m doing the premiere of my new VJ set called DJR presents Swing The Silver Screen. It’s gonna be stunning. Find out more here.

Slamboree Live + Caravan Palace DJ Set @ Electric Brixton, Nov 15th

Slamboree Caravan Palace Brixton
Also forthcoming is very impressive lineup on the 15th of November down in London-town. The Electric Brixton parties have been building up a great reputation and they return with the new show by festival legends Slamboree topping the bill, (this is one collective that everyone should experience at least once) along with electro swing legends Caravan Palace providing a DJ set, and also plenty of FBB favorites in the shape of Featurecast, Father Funk, Rumpsteppers, DJ Pony Montana, Dr. Malaka and DJ Chris Tofu.  For those haven’t been to the Electric Brixton  – it’s a stunning 1700 capacity period style venue which lends itself to this style of hoedown perfectly and it has been sold out for all of its events recently. I’m going to be down there to experience it all first hand so I’ll be reporting back next month on the biggest shakedown in the swing world. Find out more here.

See you on the dancefloor. ;)

The grime sound of Dizzee Rascal has been matched up with some funky balkan beats on this tidy freebie from Smokey Joe & The Kid. Download.

Liking this, nice deep groove from the debut EP by Mortisville.

I might be pretty godless, but this makes me want to go to church. Yes yes electro-gospel goodness!
